ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Immaculata University men's basketball defeated Moravian College, 82-76, in the opening game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College on Friday afternoon.
After trailing 37-29 at halftime, the Mighty Macs (1-1) outscored the Greyhounds, 53-39, during the second half for the comeback win. Immaculata's second-half run was fueled by 14 points from
Nelson Torres and 12 points from
Todd Stokley. The Mighty Macs shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the field during the second stanza, and were 20 of 32 (63.2%) from the free throw line.
Stokley had a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds for Immaculata.
T.J. Klinger finished with 15 points while Torres chipped in 14 points.
Kendall Peters added 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
Jeffone Hill dished out seven assists and scored seven points.
The Mighty Macs had a quick start as Klinger scored five of the first seven points, and Immaculata led 7-1 just 1:23 into the contest. William DeSantis gave the Mighty Macs their largest lead of the first half, 10-3, at the 17:03 mark after he put in a layup.
Moravian (0-2) finally got momentum as it scored 10 straight points, to take the 13-10 advantage with 14:04 left in the first half. The Greyhounds increased their edge to as large as 13 (27-14) with 5:01 remaining in the opening stanza. The Mighty Macs trimmed the Greyhounds' lead to six points twice during the final minute before halftime, but Moravian's Jeff Cullinan had a layup with four seconds to play to push the lead back to eight, 37-29, at intermission.
Immaculata came out in the second half and scored the first five points to cut its deficit to three, 37-34. Garrett Johnson hit a three for Moravian at the 18:15 mark for the Greyhounds first basket of the second half, but the Mighty Macs answered with a three-pointer of their own from Stokley.
The Mighty Macs knotted the score at 42-all at the 16:15 mark as Hill had a layup. Moravian went ahead, 44-42, on a jumper from D.J. Strayhorn, but
Jarrell Gardner was able to put in a layup and draw the foul for a three-point play. After Gardner made his free throw, Immaculata took the 45-44 lead with 15:40 remaining in the second half.
Moravian tied the game at 45-45, but after Klinger's jumper at 15:13 to put Immaculata ahead, 47-45, the Mighty Macs never gave the lead back to the Greyhounds. Immaculata led by 10 twice during the second half, the last with 7:12 to play in the game, 63-53.
Moravian was able to trim Immaculata's lead to four points with 5:39 left and again with 3:27 remaining (67-63). Immaculata extended its cushion to eight, 75-67, with 1:24 remaining, when a 7-1 run by Moravian cut the Mighty Macs' lead to 76-74 with 26 seconds left in the game. However, Immaculata sealed the game by going 6-for-6 at the foul line during the last 19 seconds.
Moravian was led by Johnson's 19 points while Strayhorn finished with 12 points.
Immaculata will play in the Scotty Wood Tournament championship game tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. against the winner of the Muhlenberg-SUNY Cobleskill game.
