Mighty Mac Men Fall To Cavaliers, 83-79

IMMACULATA, Pa.
– Despite five players in double figures, Immaculata University's men's basketball team fell to visiting Cabrini College in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Thursday night, 83-79.

The quintet of Mighty Macs (4-9, 2-4 CSAC) in double figures was led by Darnell Malabet who contributed a game-best 24 points after going 8- of 13 from the field, including knocking down six three-pointers. His six three-point buckets marked an Immacualata single-game record, breaking the previous mark of five. Malabet also led Immaculata in rebounding with eight caroms.

Robert Siter poured in 19 points and six rebounds, and Nelson Torres added 12 points and five assists. Kendall Peters and Brandon Smith each added 10 points, and Peters finished with six rebounds and Smith four.

The first half was a see-saw battle as Immaculata would get ahead by five points and then Cabrini would come back to tie the score. The Mighty Macs held their final five-point edge of the contest (28-23) with 5:54 to play in the first half when the Cavaliers strung together an 11-0 run over just under a three-minute span to quickly stake themselves to a 34-28 advantage. Cabrini would eventually take a 40-33 lead into halftime.

Cabrini (9-4, 6-1 CSAC) had taken a double-digit lead by the 14-minute mark of the second, and led by as many as 14 (60-46) with 11:04 to play. That's when Immaculata turned up the pressure with a 14-4 run during just over four minutes to make it a four-point game (64-60) with 6:53 remaining. Malabet sunk three three's during the run, and Peters also nailed a three-pointer while Smith added a layup.

Cabrini got its lead by to 10 (73-63) with 4:01 left in the contest, by Immaculata wasn't finished yet. The Mighty Macs got back within four, 75-71, just inside two minutes on an 8-2 run, which saw Torres with six points and Malabet with two, including a 6-for-6 effort from the foul line combined between the pair.

The Mighty Macs eventually got to within two, 81-79, after Siter drove through the lane for a layup with eight seconds remaining. However, John Boyd connected on both foul shots for Cabrini to push the contest out of reach for Immaculata.

Boyd and Dom Farrello each finished with 20 points to lead Cabrini scorers. Farrello finished with a double-double adding 11 rebounds.

Immaculata continues its homestand on Saturday afternoon taking on Philadelphia Biblical University at 3 p.m. at Alumnae Hall.
