Softball Picks Up Sweep Of Cedar Crest

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata rallied in the bottom of the seventh to win game one, and cruised in game two as it swept Cedar Crest on Tuesday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) softball doubleheader.

The Mighty Macs (5-8, 5-3 CSAC) rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning for two runs, all with two outs, to defeat the Falcons, 6-5, in game one. Immaculata earned the sweep after its 18-4 win in the nightcap.

Immaculata trailed 5-1 heading into the final two innings. The Mighty Macs battled for three runs in the sixth to cut their deficit to 5-4. Kathleen Haefner and Mindy Monastra each singled to begin the IU half of the fifth, and Haefner scored on Sara Holleran's RBI double. Monastra later scored on a wild pitch, and Nikki Curcione scored the final run of the inning when the Falcons' committed an error attempting a fielder's choice.

The Mighty Macs began the seventh with their first two batters getting out, and the comeback hopes began to dwindle. However, Holleran reached on an error and Carol Mastrosante doubled to center field to advance Brooke Habermehl, who pinch ran for Holleran, to third. Katie Schreck then came on to run for Mastrosante, and both Habermehl and Schreck scored when Cedar Crest's second baseman made an error on Curcione's grounded, that brought the winning runs home for Immaculata.

Curcione (3-4) got the win in the circle for Immaculata allowing eight hits and no earned runs. She struck out one and didn't walk a batter.    

Samantha Kitts suffered the loss for Cedar Crest after allowing 15 hits and six runs but only two earned.

In the second game, Immaculata scored in each of the first three innings, including a 15-run third inning to go ahead 18-2 after three complete innings.

Allison Zborowski tossed the five-inning complete game for the Mighty Macs. She gave up just six hits and all four runs she allowed were unearned.

Kitts also took the loss in game two after giving up 11 runs in 2.2 innings. Natalia Dial pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Falcons, allowing seven runs on six hits.

Monastra finished the afternoon 5-for-9 with two runs scored and five RBI. Holleran went 4-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. McKenzie Brown also collected five hits during the afternoon, and Julia Lamplugh was 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored all in the second game.

Immaculata travels to Centenary on Saturday with first pitched scheduled for 12 p.m.
