IMMACULATA, Pa. - Immaculata University dropped both ends of a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader against Neumann University, 11-3 in five innings and 10-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Neumann (8-10, 6-0 CSAC) had two big innings in the third and fifth to account for all its runs in game one.
Immaculata (1-8, 1-3 CSAC) had taken the early lead, 2-0. The first three hitters in the lineup all reached on free passes to begin the bottom half of the first.
Sara Holleran then hit a two-out single through the middle that brought
Jackie Finkbohner and
Holly Schell around to score.
Neumann charged into the lead after its six-run third, but Immaculata made it a 6-3 game after scoring one run in its half of the third when Mindy Monastra hit a homerun over the center field fence.
The Knights again exploded with a big inning in the top half of the fifth for five more runs, and after the Mighty Macs weren't able to score in the bottom of the fifth, the game was over.
Immaculata starter Nikki Curcione (1-4) pitched all five innings. She allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits, struck out three and walked four.
Brittany Campbell (2-3) went the distance in the circle for Neumann, scattering four hits and striking out four.
In the nightcap, Neumann had a seven-run seventh inning to swing the door open on a 3-1 game through six.
The Knights jumped on top of the Mighty Macs with one run in the second inning, and the hosts answered with one run in the fourth to knot the score. Finkbohner had a RBI single to center field that scored Monastra, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Neumann added two more runs in the fifth before tacking on its seven tallies in its final at-bat.
Allison Zborowski (0-4) pitched the entire game, allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits. She walked three and struck out four.
Rachel Purpuro (3-3) picked up the win for the Knights after limiting the Mighty Macs to just four hits and one run.
Immaculata hosts Penn State Berks Tuesday afternoon. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
