Softball Splits With Gwynedd-Mercy

IMMACULATA, Pa.
- Immaculata University's softball team earned a split with Gwynedd-Mercy College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both squads. The Mighty Macs won game one, 3-2, while the Griffins came back to win the second game, 6-5.

Mindy Monastra led the Mighty Macs (1-4, 1-1 CSAC) going 2-for-5, including a home run, with two RBI and three runs scored.

Immaculata got ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second of game one when Monastra singled and later scored when Julia Lamplugh hit a RBI double.

Gwynedd-Mercy (1-7, 1-1 CSAC) came back in the top of the third with one run on four hits, all singles, to tie things at 1-all.

The Mighty Macs pushed two runs across in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Monastra and Allison Zborowski both walked, and McKenzie Brown came through with a two-out RBI single that scored Monastra. Zborowski later scored when Holly Schell reached on an error.

The Griffins put one more run on the board in the sixth in their comeback attempt. Gwynedd-Mercy had runners at second and third in the top of the seventh with no outs. Schell turned an unassisted double play as she snagged a line-out and tagged the runner at third to help the Mighty Macs escape with the win.

Nikki Curcione (1-2) pitched seven innings for the win. She allowed only one earned run on nine hits and struck out seven. Maggie McSpadden (0-3) took the loss in the circle for Gwynedd-Mercy, giving up five hits and two earned runs.

In game two, each team got one run in the first. Schell scored for the Mighty Macs as she walked and later scored on a wild pitch.

After two scoreless innings, Immaculata broke through with two runs in the fourth when Monastra hit a two-run homer to give the Mighty Macs a 3-1 lead.

Gwynedd-Mercy took the lead in the top of the fifth after scoring four runs and added an insurance run in the sixth to lead 6-3.

The Griffins' run in the sixth paid off, as the Mighty Macs staged a comeback with two runs in the seventh that fell just short. Zborowski singled and Jackie Finkbohner later doubled to put two runners on base for Immaculata. Both runners then scored as Schell reached on an error that brought both Zborowski and Finkbohner home.

Zborowski (0-2) got the loss for Immaculata after allowing three earned runs on five hits over seven innings. Sydney Norton (1-2) picked up the win for Gwynedd-Mercy after allowing six hits and three earned runs during seven innings.

Christine Michalski was 4-for-8 to lead the Griffins' offense.

Immaculata will be at Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
