Men's Basketball Comes Back To Defeat Widener, 70-69

IMMACULATA, Pa.
– The Immaculata University men's basketball squad picked up its second-straight victory as it defeated visiting Widener University, 70-69, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.

The Mighty Macs were again forced to make a late surge to come up with the win as Nelson Torres provided the heroics with a jumper in the paint with 14.6 seconds remaining. Todd Stokley then came up with a game-saving blocked shot at the other end to seal the win.

Torres led the Mighty Macs with 22 points and three rebounds. Phillip Ogunleye finished with a double-double for Immaculata with 12 points to go along with his team-leading 14 rebounds and two blocks. Kendall Peters also finished in double figures, chipping in 11 points and five rebounds.

Chris McDevitt  led Widener with 15 points, all coming on three-pointers. Jarrell Nelson finished with a double-double for the Pride grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Jack Brennan was the only other Widener player in double figures with 14 points.

Immaculata had trailed for almost the entire game with the exception of two different two-point leads during the first nine minutes of the contest. Widener had gotten up by seven (30-23) with 3:02 left in the opening half, but led by just six at the break, 37-31.

The Mighty Macs had almost erased their deficit during the first 32 seconds of the second half as Torres and Peters each drove in for layups to cut the score to 37-35. Immaculata got within one at the 17-minute mark (41-40) and against 40 seconds later (44-43) as Peters sunk a three on each occasion, but Widener answered the call each time.

The Pride took their largest lead of the contest, 59-50, with 11:18 to play, but an 11-4 run by the Mighty Macs over a 5:17 span trimmed their deficit to just two (63-61). McDevitt hit the four of his five three's with 5:49 left, and from there the Mighty Macs began to chip away.

Ogunleye made three foul shots to bring Immaculata within two, 66-64, and Torres tied things up at 66-all with 3:34 left. after two minutes of scoreless action, Brandon Smith connected on two free throws, handing the Mighty Macs a 68-66 advantage. McDevitt hit his final three-pointer of the contest on Widener's next possession with 1:06 left, setting Torres up for game-winner.

Immaculata now sits at 2-3 overall and Widener falls to 5-3 overall with the loss.

Immaculata  travels to West Chester University to battle the Golden Rams on Saturday at 6 p.m.
