IMMACULATA, Pa. -
Nelson Torres sunk both end of his free throws with 0.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Immaculata University men's basketball team a 66-65 win over visiting Centenary College in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Monday night.
Immaculata led 64-62 after Robert Siter hit a jumper with 1:26 remaining to break a 62-all tie. However, two possessions later for the Cyclones, Will Atkinson sunk a three-pointer to hand Centenary the one-point edge, 65-64, with 25.2 seconds left.
As Torres drove to the basket with time winding down, the sophomore guard was fouled and sent to the foul line for two critical shots that could lift the Mighty Macs to victory. After making the first shot to tie the score at 65-all, Centenary called timeout in an attempt to ice Torres. The Cyclones' attempt failed as Torres swished the second shot, and Centenary was unable to make a play with less than a second remaining.
Torres led the Mighty Macs with 24 points, four rebounds and three assists. Siter finished with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Phillip Ogunleye had nine points to go along with his team-leading 10 rebounds.
Corey Kearney had a Centenary-high 20 points and six rebounds, while Jacob Halicki grabbed nine boards.
Centenary had opened the game to a 10-point lead (30-20) with 1:05 to play in the first half, but Immaculata responded with five points during the final 40 seconds of the half to cut the margin to 30-25 at the break.
The Mighty Macs chipped away at the lead during the first five minutes of the second half to eventually knot the score at 34-34 at the 15:02 mark. The lead went back and forth with neither team leading by more than five the rest of the way.
Immaculata now sits at 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the CSAC. Centenary drops to 3-5, 1-2 CSAC.
Immaculata continues its homestand on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. as Widener comes into Alumnae Hall.
