NEW YORK, N.Y. - Cabrini College spoiled Immaculata University's return to Madison Square Garden, 66-52, in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday evening.
Saturday's game marked the Mighty Macs first appearance in Madison Square Garden since Feb. 22, 1975, the first women's college basketball game ever played in The Garden.
Immaculata (10-7, 4-4 CSAC) was led by Chelsea McTigue's double-double performance of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chrissy Esbensen, and Kelly Brown also placed in double figures in the scoring column with 10 points apiece. Bridget Welz finished with nine points and six rebounds while Leah Kuczynski grabbed nine rebounds and had four blocks.
Cabrini (8-7, 6-2 CSAC) held just a five-point lead at halftime, 29-24.
Immaculata trailed by six, 38-32, with 11:48 remaining in the game, which was the Cavaliers largest margin of the second half at the time, but the Mighty Macs continued to chisel away at the lead. Immaculata finally cut its deficit to one, 45-44, with 6:06 as McTigue hit a jumper to cap an 8-4 run for the Mighty Macs.
Cabrini went on a 9-2 spurt over the three minutes following Immaculata coming within one, and the Cavaliers held an eight-point advantage with 3:18 left. Immaculata cut it back to six on an Esbensen jumper at the 3:06 mark, but Cabrini outscored Immaculata 9-2 during the final two minutes to pull away.
Cabrini's Alyssa Brady had game-high honors with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Deana DiAmico registered 20 points.
Immaculata returns home against Neumann University Monday evening at 6 p.m.
