RADNOR, Pa. - Melissa Fetter hit a three-run homer to straight away center, giving Immaculata the lead in the fifth inning, and the Mighty Macs held on for the 6-4 victory against Cabrini Wednesday afternoon in the CSAC Tournament quarterfinals at Cabrini Field.
With the win, fifth-seed Immaculata (16-17) advances to the semifinals where it will face top-seeded Neumann on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Neumann. The Mighty Macs are guaranteed two games this weekend as the tournament moves to a double-elimination format.
The Mighty Macs bats took a little while to warm up as they were limited by the Cavaliers to just two hits through the first four innings. Immaculata finally figured out Cabrini's Cheri Johns in the top of the fifth however, as the Mighty Macs scored four runs on four hits.
Sara Holleran walked to lead off the fifth and
Brooke Habermehl came on to run for her. However, the Mighty Macs were forced to do their damage with two outs.
Jackie Finkbohner singled, advancing Habermehl to third, who had stolen second. Fetter then hit a bomb to center, plating all three for Immaculata's first runs of the afternoon.
Val Rutt-Guerriere then singled to left field, and advanced to third when
Carol Mastrosante doubled to right field. Rutt-Guerriere then scored on a wild pitch, putting the Mighty Macs in the lead, 4-2.
Cabrini (16-19) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth as the Cavaliers lead-off hitter Ryan McDonough doubled and later scored, trimming IU's margin to 4-3.
The Mighty Macs weren't finished for the afternoon as they added solo runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win. Finkbohner had a RBI single to score Holleran in the sixth, and Mastrosante doubled home Rutt-Guerriere in the seventh.
Cabrini, which had scored solo runs in the first and second, scored one more run in seventh as Sammy Thompson, who was hit by a pitch, scored.
Mastrosante went 3-for-4, in which all three hits were doubles, and had one RBI. Immaculata's first three hitters, Finkbohner, Fetter and Rutt-Guerriere, all collected two hits. Finkbohner drove in one run and scored one while Fetter had three RBI and scored once.
Fetter earned her 10th win this season in the circle, pitching a complete game, only allowing five hits, three earned runs and striking out four.
Jones suffered the loss on the mound for the Cavaliers, giving up six runs on 10 hits, walking five and strikingout three.
