LANGHORNE, Pa. - Immaculata's softball team clinched the No. 5 seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament with its sweep of Philadelphia Biblical Sunday afternoon. The Mighty Macs won the opener, 2-0, and claimed game two, 13-5.
In the opener, Melissa Fetter doubled to lead-off the third inning, and scored two batters later when
Carol Mastrosante hit a sacrifice fly to plate Fetter, giving the Mighty Macs the 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia Biblical attempted to tie the game in the fourth with two singles, but the Crimson Eagles had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the inning. For the game, Philadelphia Biblical stranded seven runners.
The Mighty Macs scored one more run in the sixth when
Melinda Monastra doubled,
Julia Lamplugh singled behind her, and
Sara Holleran had an RBI single that scored Monastra.
Fetter pitched the shutout win for the Mighty Macs allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out seven. Betsy Ranck suffered the loss for the Crimson Eagles allowing two runs on nine hits.
In the nightcap, Immaculata poured on four runs in the first, but found itself having to come from behind for the win after Philadelphia Biblical went ahead 5-4 after four innings. The Mighty Macs answered with two runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to end the game in six innings.
Halloran hit a two-run double and Fetter smashed a three-run home run in the decisive sixth inning.
Val Rutt-Guerriere pitched a complete game, giving up five runs, three of them earned, on seven hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Immaculata opens the first-round of the CSAC softball playoffs on Wednesday with a game at Cabrini. Game time will be determined on Monday.
