ASTON, Pa. – Neumann swept a softball doubleheader from Immaculata Saturday afternoon in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams, taking the opening game, 8-0, and the nightcap, 10-1.
Melissa Fetter broke up a perfect game by Neumann's Angela Sebasto with a double in the top of the fourth inning in the opener, for the only hit of the contest for Immaculata (0-6, 0-2 CSAC).
Both pitchers were cruising along until the bottom of the third when Neumann (6-6, 2-2 CSAC) got two-out back-to-back singles, but couldn't get either runner across the plate.
The Knights began to break open the scoreless ballgame in the bottom of the fourth with one run on one hit. Neumann then put four runs on the board in the fifth inning and three in the sixth. Sheila Munson hit a grand slam to bring around all four runs in the fifth for the hosts.
Fetter (0-3) started the opener and last 5.1 innings before the contest ended. She gave up eight runs on nine hits and stuck out two.
Sebasto went six innings for the Knights, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 Mighty Macs.
In the nightcap, Jackie Finkbohner was 2-for-3 with one RBI to plate Samantha Ferry in the top of the fifth for Immaculata. Valerie Rutt-Guerriere, Sara Holleran, Jackie Mullineaux and Ferry were all 1-for-2 in the game.
However, Jenn Goslin, Kimberly Kirkpatrick and Stephanie Marrone each recorded two RBI to account for six RBI for Neumann. Lauren Strack went 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Knights to lead a total of 15 hits in the contest.
Rutt-Guerriere took the loss in the circle (0-3), pitching four innings and allowing 10 runs. Sarah McGann (2-3) picked up the win for the Knights, lasting five innings and allowing one run on six hits.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Washington College (Md.) for a non-league doubleheader at 3 p.m.
