Women's Basketball Opens With 73-57 Win

READING, Pa. Chelsea McTigue scored a career-high 31 points, leading three players in double figures as visiting Immaculata downed host Penn State Berks, 73-57, in a non-league women's basketball season opener for both schools.

McTigue went 14-for-25 from the field and 3-for-6 from the foul line in 40 minutes of play Wednesday. Berks' Courtney Bailey grabbed 22 rebounds and scored 13 points in a losing effort.

Immaculata (1-0) was 31 of 78 from the field as a team and shot 44.7 percent. Chrissy Esbensen scored 12 points in her college debut as did Leah Kuczynski. McTigue led all Mighty Mac players with eight rebounds.

Esbensen and McTigue sparked an 18-4 run over the final seven minutes of the first half that turned a 20-all tie into a 38-24 advantage for the Mighty Macs at the break.

Penn State Berks cut the lead to 11 points with 13:28 still to play in the game. However, Immaculata answered that spurt with a 15-3 run that extended the visitor's lead to 23 points (61-38) with just under nine minutes to play. McTigue fueled that outburst with nine of the 15 points.

Immaculata continues its road swing against the Penn State satellite schools with a contest opposite PSU Abington Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Bryn Mawr Tournament.
