CHESTER, Pa. – Freshman Nelson Torres poured in a game-high 17 points in his college debut, but it was not enough for Immaculata to overcome host Widener, 75-50, in a non-league men's basketball season opener for both schools Wednesday evening.
Immaculata (0-1) received 10 points from transfer Eric Barefield. Widener (1-0) got 16 points from Jamarr Johnson, 15 points from Bobby Edmonds and 14 from B.J. Smith in the win.
After being outscored 42-16 in the first half, Immaculata rallied with an 18-8 run to open the second half. The Mighty Macs would eventually cut the deficit to 14 on a fastbreak layup from Barefield with 2:29 remaining. But, that was as close as the visitors would get the rest of the night.
The Pride closed out the contest with an 11-0 run, holding Immaculata scoreless the rest of the way.
Torres led all Mighty Mac players with six rebounds. Robert Siter scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. John Boyd scored seven points.
Immaculata is back in action on Friday against Delaware Valley College in the Alvernia Tournament. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
