IMMACULATA, Pa. – Matt Sosna scored a game-high 30 points and Charles Jones added 21 to lead visiting Widener to a 75-66 overtime victory over host Immaculata at Alumnae Hall Monday evening.
The Mighty Macs (5-10) forced the overtime period when Sean Fordham nailed both ends of a one-and-one with 9.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie things up 61-61. Fordham finished with 12 points on the evening, including 10 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Sosna knocked down two foul shots for Widener (14-4) with 38.1 seconds left and the game knotted at 59.
However, Immaculata went 1-for-11 in the extra session as Widener pulled away to avoid the upset bid. The Mighty Macs have now lost its last four contests.
Immaculata struggled all night from the field, shooting just 30.2 percent (19-for-63). Kyle Finklea led the hosts with 16 points, but shot just 6 of 23 while Fordham was 1 of 11 from the field. John Boyd finished with 15 points.
Jamarr Johnson posted a double-double for Widener with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson, Sosna and Jones accounted for 64 of the Pride's 75 points on the night.
Immaculata took its largest lead of the game at 23-11 with 8:28 left in the opening half, before Widener raced back into the contest with a 16-3 run over the next three minutes, 23 seconds to grab the lead (27-26) five minutes before halftime.
The game flowed back and forth with the Mighty Macs opening a seven-point lead with 9:53 to go in regulation. Widener answered with a 9-2 spurt over the next 3:27 to even up the score at 55-all with 6:26 remaining.
A layup from Robert Siter (9 points) gave the hosts a three-point cushion with 4:23 left, and the Pride outscored the Mighty Macs 6-3 the rest of the way.
