Immaculata’s Comeback Falls Short Against Chestnut Hill, 78-68

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Chestnut Hill College placed all five of its starters in double figures, led by Ryan Cook's 19 points, to hand Immaculata University a 78-68 defeat in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday at Alumnae Hall.

Kyle Finklea paced Immaculata with 26 points while Julius Lopez added 23 points, including five treys, and seven rebounds. Sean Fordham tallied seven points and led the Mighty Macs on the glass with 12 rebounds.

It was a battle from beyond the arc as the two squads combined for 21 three-point baskets during the game. Immaculata recorded a single-game high with 11 treys while Chestnut was 10-for-22.

Chestnut Hill dominated the early part of the first half, limiting Immaculata to a Lopez three pointer at the 17:21 mark as the Griffins built a 12-3 advantage by the 14:28 mark. Shots began to fall for the Mighty Macs as they trimmed the margin to three, 12-9, by the 10:04 mark while keeping the Griffins scoreless for a stretch of 6:49.

The Griffins had built their lead back to nine, 23-14, with 3:55 remaining in the opening half but the Mighty Macs nailed threes on consecutive trips down the floor by Lopez and Finklea, and Finklea made two free throws to pull Immaculata within two, 26-24, heading into the final minute of the stanza.

Kevin Whaley hit two foul shots and Julian McFadden threw up a half-court attempt as time expired that was good to give Chestnut Hill the 31-24 halftime lead.

The Mighty Macs began the second half on a 16-9 run to tie the contest at 40-all at the 14:11 mark. Lopez and Finklea each added seven points during the spurt. Immaculata took its first lead of the game, 43-42, at 13:53 after Fordham hit a three pointer.

The game swung back-and-forth during the next three minutes, but Immaculata still led by one, 53-52, with 10:25 remaining. Chestnut Hill went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:05 to put the Griffins ahead by double digits for the first time all game, 64-53.

Immaculata was able to trim the margin to five, 68-63, with 3:09 to play, but it wasn't enough to overcome Chestnut Hill.

Dan Comas recorded the game's only double-double for the Griffins with 13 points and 13 rebounds. McFadden and Whaley each had 15 points, and Brandon Williams rounded out Chestnut Hill's quintet of starters with 11.

Immaculata returns to action on Monday, Jan. 19, hosting Alvernia at 7 p.m.
