Mighty Macs Drop Season Finale To Marywood

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University softball team dropped both ends of its season-finale doubleheader to Marywood University, 5-3 and 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Immaculata concludes the 2008 slate 4-20 overall and 4-16 in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. Marywood improves to 20-18 overall, 10-10 PAC, and clinches he final playoff spot in the PAC Tournament with its two wins this afternoon.

In the first game, the Pacers pushed across two runs in both the top of the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead. The Mighty Macs cut the deficit to 4-2 after scoring two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Megan Gallagher doubled to left center and came around to score after two wild pitches. Jackie Mullineaux walked and Sara Koloejchick, who came in to pitch run for Mullineaux, advanced to third on the wild pitches and later scored when Jackie Finkbohner singled through the middle.

Immaculata picked up more ground in the bottom of the fifth when Missy Hopely singled for score Melissa Fetter, making the score 4-3. However, Marywood put up in insurance run in the top of the seventh, and held on for the 5-3 victory.

Carol Mastrosante and Sara Holleran were each 2-for-4 during game one to lead Immaculata. Val Rutt-Guerriere (2-10) pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs and striking out one.

Cailtin Hadzimichalis and Kim Flanagan each collected two hits while Miranda Sorber had two RBI during game one. Nikki Belles (9-2) got the win in the circle allowing just two earned runs and striking out two.

In the night cap, Immaculata struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Gallagher drove home Rutt-Guerriere, who had walked earlier in the inning. Marywood tied the game at 1-all in the top of the third when Brittany Davis homered. The Pacers added two more runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth and seventh for the 5-1 win.

Holleran recorded Immaculata's only hit of the second game. Fetter (2-10) pitched all seven innings allowing five runs and striking out four.

Erika Cook and Megan Haikes were each 3-for-4 with one and two RBI, respectively. Mallory Gable got the win pitching a complete game one-hitter.
