Immaculata Earns Split With Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. – Sara Holleran went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Melissa Fetter tossed a complete game, five-hitter in the second game to silence Cabrini, 9-1, in six innings. However, the host Cavaliers hit a walk-off home run to take game one, 9-8, Friday afternoon.

Holleran's first RBI of the game put Immaculata (1-7, 1-5 PAC) out in front 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Cabrini (7-10, 4-2 PAC) answered with a run in the bottom of the second, and Fetter kept the visitors bats quiet the rest of the game while the Mighty Macs scored in each of the last four innings to build a 9-1 lead.

Fetter (1-3) allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three in the night cap. The Cavaliers sprinkled three hits and left five runners on base over the final four innings, but could not muster a run as the Mighty Macs kept increasing their lead, as Immaculata earned its first league win of the season and halted a seven-game losing streak in the process.

Fetter was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored to help her cause.

Carol Mastrosante finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Valerie Rutl-Guerriere, Megan Gallagher, Missy Hopely and Melissa Cifaloglio each registered two hits in the game. Rutl-Guerriere drove in two runs and Gallagher finished with one RBI.

In game one, Cabrini plated two runners in the bottom of the first inning. The visitors quickly responded with a four-run inning in the top of the second. Jackie Mullineaux doubled driving in Hopely and Rutl-Guerriere, and Mullineaux and Melinda Monastra later came around to score on a Fetter double.

Immaculata added another run in the top of the third before Cabrini tallied two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by Kristie Sandefur.

The Mighty Macs continued to extend their advantage with one run in the four and two more runs in the fifth, keeping the Cavaliers scoreless in the bottom of each inning for an 8-4 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Cheri Johns, who came on in relief of starter Rachel Davis in the fifth inning, held the Mighty Macs to only one hit in the scoreless top of the sixth, while the Cavaliers exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 8-all.

Immaculata could not muster a run in the top of the seventh, leaving Gallagher at second. Johns flew out to the right fielder to start the bottom of the seventh for Cabrini. The Cavaliers next batter, Liz Zimmer, hit a walk-off homerun to lift Cabrini to the 9-8 win.

Mastrosante finished game one 3-for-4, while Fetter, who was 2-for-5 from the plate, drove in a team-high four RBI. Mullineaux finished with 2 RBI and Jackie Finkbohner added an RBI.

Rutl-Guerriere (0-4) threw 6.1 innings in the first game and allowed 12 hits and struck out eight.

Immaculata will be back in action tomorrow, March 29, at Rosemont College at 1 p.m.
