Immaculata Falls In Conference Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Alvernia College swept a softball doubleheader from Immaculata University Wednesday afternoon, taking the opening game, 11-3, and the night cap, 8-0. It marked the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

After Alvernia (5-4, 2-0 PAC) put three runs on the board in the top of the second, Sara Holleran led off the bottom part of the inning with a single and came around to score when Carol Mastrosante hit a homerun.

Immaculata (0-2, 0-2 PAC) tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the third with a lead-off triple by Megan Gallagher, and Melissa Fetter followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Alvernia exploded with three runs in the fourth to blow open a 3-3 ballgame. The Crusaders went on to add two runs in the fifth, and put the finishing touches on the Mighty Macs with three more runs in the sixth, which ended the contest after Immaculata failed to score.

Mastrosante finished 2-for-2 with the two-run homer. Gallagher, Jackie Finkbohner, Holleran, Missy Hopely and Melissa Cifaloglio each had a hit. 

Melissa Fetter (0-1) pitched all six innings, giving up eight earned runs and striking out six in the loss.

Emily Williams was 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Crusaders. Williams also pitched all six innings in the circle, allowing three runs and striking out eight Mighty Macs.

In the night cap, Alvernia's Michelle Jensen tossed a perfect game. The Crusaders scored two runs in the first, single runs in the second, third and fifth and three tallies in the fourth for the 8-0 decision.

Val Rutl-Guerriere took the loss. She pitched a complete game, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs while striking out two.

Sorrentino, Michelle Kassab and Jackie Rhoads all went 3-for-4 for Alvernia.

Immaculata will be back in action on Friday when they host Cedar Crest at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.
