Gwynedd-Mercy Tops Immaculata, 74-55

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's men's basketball squad fell to Gwynedd-Mercy College, 74-55, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9, at Alumnae Hall.

It marks the Mighty Macs (15-6 overall, 10-2 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) first loss at home this season, after reeling off eight straight victories dating back to the final home game of last season. The Griffins improve to 15-4 overall, 8-5 PAC.

Junior Sean Fordham led the Mighty Macs with 14 points and four steals, while junior Kyle Finklea chipped in 12 points. Senior Dan Lepone added 10 points and four rebounds. Sophomores Jayson Hyman and Scott Marston led Immaculata on the glass with five rebounds each.

Immaculata and Gwynedd-Mercy played one another just six days ago, as the Mighty Macs came back from a 25-point halftime deficit to defeat the Griffins, 81-73, on Monday night.

However, that was not the case this afternoon as Gwynedd-Mercy built a 16-point halftime advantage and came away with the 19-point victory.

Gwynedd-Mercy set the tempo of the game early as it won the opening tip and Haven Wroten went in for the dunk just five seconds into the contest. Gwynedd-Mercy had its largest lead of the first stanza, 36-14, with 5:11 remaining in the half. But, Immaculata ended the half on a 9-3 run, and trailed, 39-23, at halftime.

Immaculata appeared to have the comeback in hand as it narrowed the deficit to 12, 59-47, with 7:09 remaining in the contest. However, the Griffins used a 12-3 spurt, including 8-of-8 from the foul line, over the next 4:23 to go back up by 21.

Dave Smith and Lemeire Talley each registered 15 points to lead the Griffins, and Smith grabbed seven rebounds. Tom Keenan tallied 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Wroten finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Immaculata begins a three-game road trip on Monday, Feb. 11, when the Mighty Macs travel to Eastern at 8 p.m.
