IMMACULATA, Pa. – Sophomore Jayson Hyman's layup with 6.1 seconds left lifted Immaculata to a 64-63 victory over Eastern in a PAC men's basketball game on Thursday night at Alumnae Hall.
Immaculata's win tonight, coupled with Misericordia's 55-52 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy, gives the Mighty Macs (16-9, 11-5 PAC) the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament and a first-round bye. Eastern ends its season with a record of 11-14 overall and 8-8 in the PAC.
The second half alone saw nine ties and 13 lead changes as both teams battled back and forth. A 3-pointer by junior Kyle Finklea put the hosts in front 58-57 with two minutes left, but Eastern's Brent Williams answered with a jumper to push the visitors back on top.
Finklea hit another jumper to give the Macs the lead again. However, Williams nailed both free throws after being fouled to give Eastern the lead back.
It was Finklea to the rescue once more when he knocked down another jumper that put Immaculata in front 62-61 with 59 seconds remaining. This time, Eastern's Matt Flanagan converted two free throws with 17 ticks left to set up Hyman's heroics.
Finklea finished with 20 points on the night while Hyman cashed in 16 and Rob Jones had 11.
Daryl Leegwater posted a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) off the bench for Eastern.
Immaculata will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Tip-off for that playoff contest at Alumnae Hall is set for 7 p.m.
