Connecticut Overcomes Immaculata, 67-55

MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Connecticut College's men's basketball team earned a 67-55 victory over Immaculata University in the first round of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

Connecticut (1-1) will face NYU, a 64-60 winner over Baruch College in the other first-round game, Sunday at 3 p.m., while Immaculata (1-1) will face Baruch in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Kyle Finklea led Immaculata with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Sean Fordham had 12 points, six boards and three steals. Josh Alderson finished with eight points and six boards. The Mighty Macs out-rebounded the Camels, 37-35, but shot just .327 (18 of 55) from the floor, and sunk .704 (19-for-27) of their free throws.

Connecticut took control with an 11-2 run late in the second half, a surge started with a three-pointer from Ulises Veras and concluded with a trey by Billy Karis (11 points, six assists) to stretch a 47-44 lead to 58-46 with 3:37 remaining.

Shavar Bernier scored a game-high 18 points and Veras added 14 points and seven rebounds, leading Connecticut. Chris Kehoe added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Connecticut, which shot .565 (13-for-23) in the second half, including 8 of 12 (.667) from long range.  Overall, the Camels were .447 (21-for-47) from the field, including a .476-effort (10-for-21) from three-point range.
