MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Immaculata men's lacrosse team closed out non-conference play on Wednesday evening when it visited Montclair State. Montclair State scored the game's first seven goals to gain a lead they would not relinquish, as the Mighty Macs fell 17-6.
Jude Azzarano (three goals and one assist) and
Jason Smaron (one goal and three assists) led the Mighty Macs with four points each.
Matthew Frame added a pair of goals for the Macs.
Immaculata falls to 10-5 overall, and they are 2-1 in Atlantic East Conference play, as Montclair State improves to 12-3 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MONTCLAIR STATE
- The host Red Hawks came out firing, scoring six unanswered goals in the opening quarter. Montclair controlled possession early, winning faceoffs and capitalizing on extra opportunities to build a quick 6–0 advantage. Immaculata generated five shots in the frame but was unable to break through.
- Immaculata began to settle in during the second quarter, getting on the board with two goals as Matthew Frame and Jude Azzarano each found the net, with Jason Smaron assisting on Azzarano's goal. Despite the improved offensive flow, Montclair added three goals of its own to take a 9–2 lead into halftime.
- Both teams exchanged goals in the third. Jason Smaron scored, assisted by Azzarano, and Azzarano added his second goal unassisted as Immaculata trailed 13-4 after three quarters of play.
- Frame scored his second goal early in the fourth quarter, assisted by Smaron. Montclair responded with four additional goals before Azzarano completed his hat trick with a man-up goal assisted by Smaron with 3:12 remaining. The Red Hawks would go on to close out the 17-6 win.
