Men’s Volleyball Rallies from Two Sets Down to Topple Neumann

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata staged an impressive comeback Tuesday night, rallying from a two-set deficit to defeat Neumann in a thrilling five-set United East Conference matchup.
 
After dropping the first two sets (20-25, 21-25), the Mighty Macs completed the reverse sweep, taking the next three (25-17, 25-15, 16-14) to secure the comeback win.
 
The match was highlighted by record-breaking performances from Immaculata's offense. Luke Dortenzo dished out a program-record 52 assists, surpassing the previous mark of 48 set by Joe Martell in 2025. Josh McGurl also made history, recording 24 kills to break his own program record of 22.
 
With the win, Immaculata improves to 5-4 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. Neumann falls to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in the United East Conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NEUMANN
  • Immaculata and Neumann traded points early, with the set featuring 11 ties, displaying a back-and-forth battle. Neumann used a late 5-1 push to turn a 19-18 lead into a 24-19 advantage. Immaculata won a late point, but Neumann took the first set 25-10.
  • Immaculata fell behind early in the second set, 11-6. Immaculata cut the lead to 11-8 on a kill by Noah Zunski and a block by Josh McGurl. Neumann extended their lead to 23-17. Immaculata rallied as Michael Prall served a pair of points to cut the lead to 23-20. Neumann would go on to take a 2-0 lead, taking set two 25-21.
  • Facing a 2-0 deficit, Immaculata opened an early 5-1 lead in set three, only to have Neumann cut the lead to 6-5. Immaculata then went on a 5-0 run, as Alex Consones served four straight points that included three kills by Josh McGurl and one from Nate Bailey to take an 11-5 lead. Noah Zunski later served three straight points, and Michael Prall closed out the set serving five straight points to win set three 25-17.
  • In set four, the teams traded points early with Immaculata trailing 9-7. Immaculata went on a 5-1 run, then Alex Corsones served nine straight points as Immaculata took a commanding 22-11 lead. Noah Zunski got a kill to close out the fourth set with Immaculata winning 25-15 to force the deciding set.
  • Immaculata took an early 6-4 lead in set five, only to have Neumann run off five straight points to take a 9-6 lead. Trailing 13-10, Immaculata got a kill from Jordan Brown, and Alex Corsones served a point to cut the Neumann lead to 13-12. Neumann won a point to take a 14-12 lead. Immaculata fought off a match point to get a side out, then Michael Prall served three consecutive points, which included a Josh McGurl kill, and Nate Bailey's kill on match point, completed the comeback for Immaculata as they took set five 16-14 to complete the reverse sweep, winning the match 3-2.
