Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Earns Split in King's College Tri-Match

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Immaculata women's volleyball won one of their two matches at King's College on Saturday. They defeated Keystone 3-0 before falling to King's 3-0.

The Mighty Macs are 2-5 for the season. Their first AEC game will be on Saturday, Oct. 11 versus Saint Elizabeth.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST KEYSTONE
  • Despite losing the first point of the day, the Mighty Macs ripped off the next eight of 10.  During that run, Angelica Santini Bulerin served three assists on three Emma Hodgson kills. Keystone attempted to get back in the set, but an Immaculata ace and kills by Damani Myers and Diana Rivera gave Immaculata a 25-13 win.
  • The Giants took the lead in the second set with early aggressiveness. The Mighty Macs, down 12-9, used an 8-0 outburst to regain a five-point advantage. That was part of a larger 13-2 run. The Mighty Macs capitalized on a plethora of Keystone mistakes. A Calissa Araujo kill counted as Immaculata's final point to hand the Mighty Macs a 25-17 decision.
  • Neither side had a strong advantage in the initial stages of set three. The Mighty Macs and Giants tied at 2-2 and 8-8. A 10-1 run placed Immaculata in the lead for good, and they scored the final three points of the match. An Adriana Ventura ace capped off the match with a 25-14 victory. Immaculata defeated Keystone 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS AGAINST KEYSTONE
  • Myers led the Mighty Macs with 10 kills on 17 attacks.
  • Santini Bulerin saw 21 assists. She tied Ventura for a team-high three aces.
  • A team-best 20 digs went to Ventura, who was the only Immaculata player to have double-digit digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST KING'S
  • The Mighty Macs started their second match with four unanswered points, which forced a quick King's timeout. The Monarchs slowly climbed back in the set with multiple kills. Despite an Immaculata 11-8 lead, a 6-1 swing from the Monarchs gave them the advantage. The Mighty Macs came close to forcing a set "overtime" (tying at 24), but King's grabbed a 25-22 win in set one.
  • Contrary to the beginning of the first set, it was the Monarchs who pounced on an initial run. A 7-1 lead forced a Mighty Macs timeout. Immaculata kept pace with the home team with an Alayah Phifer ace and kills from Hodgson and Mia Esposito. Immaculata got the score as close as 17-12 before the Monarchs ended the set, 25-14, on five straight points.
  • Three of the first five points for Immaculata in set three were on Esposito kills. A 12-2 Monarchs stretch gave them a six-point cushion in the middle of the set. The Mighty Macs answered with seven straight points, courtesy of kills from Myers, Araujo, and Eliana Szatkowski. A final 5-2 run concluded the set at 25-21. King's took a 3-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS AGAINST KING'S
  • Esposito tallied a career-high 19 kills. This beat out her previous career-high of 16, which she set on Thursday at Moravian. Her 19 kills in a three set match, ties the IU program record for kills in a three set match held by Jayme Lenosky, who accomplished the feat on October 16, 2007, vs Rosemont.
  • Santini Bulerin led the team with 29 assists.
  • Ventura's team-high 16 digs was first for the defensive unit.
