Martell Sets Program Record, as Men's Volleyball Falls to Neumann in Five Set Match

ASTON, Pa.- The Immaculata men's volleyball team fell to Neumann in a hard-fought five set match at Neumann 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 13-15). Setter Joe Martell broke his own IU program record with 48 assists during the match. Josh McGurl had 17 kills, Noah Zunski had 14 kills, and Nate Bailey had 11 kills.  

With the loss Immaculata falls to 6-8 overall, while Neumann improves to 10-9 overall, and they are 3-1 in United East Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set 1- With the score tied at 15-15, Joe Martell served five consecutive points that included a kill from Josh McGurl, and a pair of service aces as Immaculata took a 20-15 lead. Neumann would rally to tie the score at 23-23. After earning a side out, Noah Zunski got a service ace to win the first set for Immaculata 25-23. 

Set 2- In the second set the teams exchanged points early in the set. Nate Bailey got a kill to make the score Neumann 10, Immaculata 9. Neumann would use a three-point run, and a four-point run to extend their lead to 18-11. Neumann would go on to take set two 25-16. 

Set 3- In set three, Immaculata was trailing 15-11, when Immaculata earned a side out on a kill by Christian Lee. Joe Martell would serve three consecutive points to tie the score at 18-18. Christian Lee got a block to give Immaculata as 21-20 lead. Noah Zunski would close out the set with a service ace as Immaculata took set three 25-22. 

Set 4- In the fourth set Immaculata trailed 20-16, Noah Zunski served consecutive points to pull Immaculata within two points at 20-18. Immaculata would get kills from Josh McGurl and Noah Zunski to tie the score at 22-22. Josh McGurl would get another kill to tie the score at 23-23. Neumann would win the final two points to take set four 25-23. 

Set 5- In the deciding set, Immaculata got kills from Josh McGurl , Noah Zunski and Michael Prall to take an early 7-3 lead. Immaculata took a 13-12 lead on a kill by Noah Zunski. Neumann would rally scoring the final three points, taking the set 15-13, and the match 3-2. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Joe Martell broke his own program record for assists in a match with 48. He had three kills, three service aces, and had nine digs. 

  • Josh McGurl had 17 kills, one service ace, and 14 digs. 

  • Noah Zunski had 14 kills, three service aces, and 11 digs. 

UP NEXT 

  • The Immaculata softball team will be back in acton on Saturday, March 29th when they visit Widener University for a tri-match with Widener and Hunter College. Immaculata will play Hunter College at 1:00 p.m. and Neumann at 3:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Center at Widener.
