IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata women's volleyball was victorious on Thursday, defeating the Penn State Brandywine Nittany Lions 3-1.
The Mighty Macs are 7-13 for the season. They are 1-0 in AEC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PENN STATE BRANDYWINE
- The first set was evenly matched early on, as both teams traded 4-0 runs. Seven straight points from Immaculata made the score 21-15. Antonia Antolini saw three kills in those seven points. The Mighty Macs closed out the set on a Penn State Brandywine error, 25-17.
- After a slow start, Immaculata bounced back with a 5-1 push to go up 8-5. Although the Nittany Lions would tie the score midway through, the Mighty Macs had a sequence of scoring two points for every one Penn State Brandywine point. They did this three times in a row. Kills from Angelica Santini Bulerin and Calissa Araujo were the last points of the set, and Immaculata claimed a 25-20 win.
- Neither side gained an edge in the beginning stages of set three. Although the Mighty Macs held a 15-11 advantage, the Nittany Lions slowly mounted a comeback. The visitors forced a set "overtime" by tying the score at 24-24. Mia Esposito put Immaculata ahead by one point with a kill, but Penn State Brandywine completed their comeback with a 27-25 victory in set three.
- A 7-1 Immaculata run gave the Mighty Macs an 8-4 lead in the fourth set. Despite the Nittany Lions staying close, a 6-1 outburst put the home team in the lead for good. Immaculata scored four of the final five points, with an Alayah Phifer kill ending the set at 25-16. Immaculata won the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Emma Hodgson led the Mighty Macs with 14 kills.
- Santini Bulerin had one of her best matches of the season. Not only did she have a team-best 34 assists, but she had a season-high in kills (7), blocks (3), and digs (17).
- Adriana Ventura was the anchor of the back row with 18 digs.
