IMMACULATA, Pa.- On the heels of the team's win on Saturday morning, the Immaculata field hockey team (3-4) returned to the field on Wednesday evening to take on Widener in a non-conference match up. In what was a tightly contested game throughout,
Abby Fekete provided the game-winner 2:30 into the first overtime period to lift Immaculata to the 2-1 victory.
In the first quarter, both teams threatened early, but neither team was able to convert on their opportunities. In the final minute of the first quarter, Immaculata broke through as
Lauren Vandenbraak scored on an assist from
Gabrielle O'Brien with 0:54 remaining.
The second quarter was like the first as both teams threatened, but neither side was able to break through. Each team finished the first half with four shots, and Widener had the only penalty corner of the half in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Widener began to take the advantage, with six shots and eighty penalty corners in the quarter.
Julia Levase stood strong in the Mighty Macs goal making four saves in the quarter.
Widener continued to control play in the fourth quarter with six shots, and six additional penalty corners. Widener finally broke through, scoring the game tying goal from a penalty corner with 7:04 remaining in the game. The Mighty Macs defense and
Julia Levase held off Widener to send the game into sudden victory overtime.
In the overtime period, Immaculata earned their first penalty corner of the game.
Abby Fekete inserted the corner to
Della George, who took the shot on goal that Abbey Fekete deflected into the net to give the Mighty Macs the 2-1 victory.
Immaculata was led offensively by
Lauren Vandenbraak and
Abby Fekete who each scored a goal and had two shots on goal.
Della George and
Gabrielle O'Brien each added assists for the Mighty Macs.Â
On the defensive side
Julia Levase was strong in goal making eight saves. The Immaculata defensive core of
Madalyn Bonner,
Kaitlin Gale,
Della George,
Rachel Madden,
Abby Fekete, and midfielders
Lauren Vandenbraak and
Lauren Buckel helped the Macs defend 14 out 15 penalty corners for Widener.
The Immaculata field hockey team will be back in action on Saturday, September 23
rd when they host Kean University at Draper Walsh Stadium at 1:00 PM.
