IMMACULATA, Pa. – The reigning two-time Atlantic East Conference Champion Immaculata women's tennis team secured their chance to make it three consecutive titles on Thursday as they defeated Marymount 5-4 in the Atlantic East Semifinals.
The Mighty Macs claimed the first match of the day in first doubles, where
Annamarie Degnan and
Pamela Kontaras defeated the Saints 8-3. Third doubles was the next to wrap up, with
Audrey Keen and
Jenna Muttik dropping a close 8-6 match.
Jessica Dougherty and
Kelly O'Brien then took home the win in second doubles. The pair found themselves in a 7-7 gridlock, winning the tiebreaker set 7-1.
Moving into singles competition, Degnan took her first singles match 6-1, 6-1. Dougherty, meanwhile, dropped her second singles match 6-0, 6-0 while Kontaras claimed a third singles victory 6-1, 6-3. O'Brien and Keen then dropped their respective fourth and fifth singles matches 6-1, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-1.
With the match tied at 4-4, all eyes turned onto sixth singles. Muttik battled to win a tiebreaker in set one, taking the set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-2. Muttik then rallied to win set two 7-5, securing the match as well as the Macs' fourth straight Atlantic East Championship appearance.
The Mighty Macs will now travel to Scranton, Pa. on Saturday to defend their title as Atlantic East Champions.
