READING, Pa. – It came down to the last second as the Immaculata women's basketball team dropped their final non-conference game of the season against Alvernia on Monday night in a 57-56 final.
The Mighty Macs quickly found themselves down against the Golden Wolves as the score stood at 8-2 four minutes into the first quarter. The Wolves continued to increase their lead on the quarter, ending the period with a 17-8 lead over the Macs.
The first five minutes of the second quarter, however, belonged to the Macs. The Mighty Macs went on a 10-3 run to start the quarter as
Kaitlyn Racobaldo and
Morgan Falcone each recorded four points. Though the Macs brought the game to within two at 20-18, the Wolves widened the gap heading into halftime as the Macs were down 28-23.
It was a team effort on the first half for the Macs as Falcone and Racobaldo each scored six points on the half.
Reese Mullins also contributed with five points while
Theresa Kearney and
Abigail Lentowski led the Macs with five rebounds each.
The Mighty Macs dominated the third quarter, going 21-11 on the quarter against the Golden Wolves. Over the first six minutes of the quarter, the Macs chipped away at the Wolves' lead until a three-pointer from
Erin Kelly tied the game up at 35-35. Kelly's three-pointer kicked off what would be a 12-0 run over a two-plus minute period for the Macs. The Mighty Macs rode that momentum through the end of the quarter, holding a 44-39 lead going into the fourth.
Kicking off the fourth quarter, the Macs doubled their lead thanks to points from Falcone and Racobaldo. Down 10 points, however, the Wolves went on an 8-0 rally including consecutive three-pointers to cut the Macs' lead. The Golden Wolves continued to put pressure on the Macs, scoring 16 points to the Macs' seven in first eight minutes of the quarter, regaining the lead at 55-51. Now down four, the Macs attempted to mount a comeback in the final two minutes, brining the score to 57-56 on a jumper from
Theresa Kearney with 46 seconds remaining. The Macs, however, would not be able to convert on a shot with seconds remaining in regulation as the Golden Wolves held on in the 57-56 final score.
Kearney led the Macs offensively on the game with 12 points scored along with five rebounds and one blocked shot. Falcone also reached double figures in points, scoring 11 while adding four rebounds, two assists, one block, and three steals. The trio of
Reese Mullins,
Abigail Lentowski, and
Tessa Liberatoscioli, meanwhile, each recorded seven rebounds on the game.
The Mighty Macs return to Atlantic East Conference competition on Wednesday evening as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy for a 6:00 P.M. contest.
