Macs Split Tri-Match Versus PSU Behrend and Rosemont

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata men's volleyball team split its home tri-match against Penn State Behrend and Rosemont on Sunday. The Mighty Macs dropped their match against the Nittany Lions 3-0 before sweeping the Ravens 3-0 in the final match of the day.

Down 5-1 to start set one against the Lions, the Macs rebounded to tie the game at 9-9. At that point, however, the Lions went on a 5-0 run to take the 14-9 lead, one which they would capitalize on as they defeated the Macs 25-17 to take set one.

Penn State Behrend did not relent in set one, taking a 9-3 lead early and did not look back. Though Immaculata attempted to rally later in the set, it would prove to be insufficient as Penn State won set two 25-12.

Down 9-5 in set three, the Mighty Macs rallied back to claim a 14-13 lead. From that point on, however, the Macs were only able to secure four points as the Nittany Lions claimed the sweep with a 25-18 final score in set three.

Garrett Pepper led the Macs on the match with 11 kills along with one block. Meanwhile, Joe Martell earned a team-leading 16 assists while adding four kills. John Carter also contributed defensively with 13 digs.

The Macs next faced off with the Rosemont Ravens. Joe Martell kicked off set one for the Macs with a 9-0 run including three aces. With a large lead out of the gate, the Macs did relent, going on a second nine-point run to take a commanding 21-3 lead before taking set one by a score of 25-5.

The Ravens struck first in set two, taking an early 5-1 lead over the Macs. The Macs then responded with a seven-point run featuring three kills from Garrett Pepper to claim an 8-5 advantage. Following some back-and-forth action, the score stood 15-13 in favor of the Macs. From this point on, the Macs shut the Raven's offense down, going on a 10-3 run to secure the 25-16 victory in set two.

Moving into set three, the Mighty Macs continued to dominate, claiming an early 8-2 lead over the Ravens. The Ravens would only manage to score 10 points on the set as the Mighty Macs cruised to a 25-10 victory to earn the series sweep.

Pepper led the Macs once again with 15 kills while Martell earned 27 assists for the Mighty Macs. Bryce Wiltbank and Martell each earned four aces on the match while John Bohrer led the Macs with 11 digs on the match.

The Mighty Macs return to action next on Wednesday as they host Neumann in a 7:00 P.M. non-conference matchup.
