Macs Rally to Defeat Pacers in Overtime

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Mighty Macs women's basketball team claimed victory in a come-from-behind overtime classic against Marywood on Wednesday to start Atlantic East Conference play.
 
The Mighty Macs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before the Pacers managed to score in the first quarter. Though the Pacers began to respond later in the quarter, the Macs maintained an eight-point advantage at the end of the first quarter as the score stood 17-9.
 
Graduate student Theresa Kearney earned eight points on the quarter to lead the Mighty Macs. Her final two points of the quarter, a pair of free throws with under a minute remaining, tied Kearney with Meg Legere for ninth in program history with 1,241 points.
 
The first five minutes of the second quarter belonged to the Pacers as they outshot the Macs 12-6 over the stretch to claim a 23-22 lead. They maintained the pace of the final five minutes of the quarter, outshooting the Macs 8-4 to claim a 31-26 lead heading into the half.
 
Kearney led the Macs at the half with eight points scored while accruing three rebounds. Kearney went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe on the half.
 
Immaculata kept pace with Marywood throughout the third quarter as Marywood led 10-9 on the third quarter. Kearney notched four points on the half while Erin Kelly scored a three-pointer as well.
 
Down by six heading into the fourth quarter, the Macs went to work, cutting away at the Pacers' lead for the first seven minutes until two consecutive jump-shots from Abigail Lentowski tied the game up at 43-43 with three minutes remaining.

Marywood regained the lead with just over a minute before the Mighty Macs made four straight free throws with under a minute to got to take a 47-45 lead. Marywood then scored as time expired to force overtime.
 
Kearney and Lentowski earned eight points each on the second half to lead the Macs' comeback efforts.
 
After the Pacers got on board first in overtime, Abigail Boyer and Erin Kelly each notched three-pointers to give the Macs the advantage. Up 55-52 with under 90 seconds remaining, Boyer dropped another three-pointer. The Pacers responded in kind with a three of their own before scoring with 40 seconds remaining to bring the score to 58-57. A three-pointer by Erin Kelly with 13 seconds remaining sealed the deal for the Macs as they claimed the 62-57 overtime victory.
 
The Macs shot an outstanding 18-for-26 (69.2%) from the charity stripe while going 19-for-68 (27.9%) from the field on the night. Kearney, meanwhile, moves into sole possession of ninth place in career scoring with her 16-point performance. She also notched seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
 
Lentowski led the Macs in rebounds with 13 on the night while also earning 14 points. Kelly, meanwhile, dropped three three-points on the night as she scored 11 points along with two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
 
The Macs are next scheduled to return to action on the road on Saturday against DeSales.
