ARLINGTON, Va. – Asa Kitchen dropped 20 points as the Macs defeated Marymount by a score of 76-62 in their Wednesday night road game. With the victory, the Macs improve to a 5-10 record on the season with a 2-1 record in Atlantic East Conference play.
The Mighty Macs found themselves down early as the Saints took a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of action. A three-pointer from
Gregory Vlassopoulos started a seven-point run by the Macs to close the gap with the Saints to 12-9. Later, down 23-21 with eight minutes remaining in the first half,
Brandon McCullough sinked a three-pointer to give the Macs their first lead of the day at 24-23. The three-pointer kicked off what would become a 14-point scoring streak for the Macs spanning nearly seven minutes as the Macs took a strong 35-23 lead over the Saints with 90 seconds remaining in the first half. The Saints scored six points in the final minute of action, however, as the Macs held a 37-29 advantage over them at the half.
On the half,
Asa Kitchen led the Macs with ten points scored, including eight straight points for the Macs. As a team, the Macs shot 15-for-33 (45.45%) from the field on the first half while shooting 5-for-12 (41.67%) from beyond the arc.
The Macs were quick to add to their lead in the second half, using the first five minutes to restore their double-digit lead at 44-34. Over the next six-plus minutes, however, Marymount went on a 12-3 run of their own, bringing the score to within one at 47-46 with 8:45 remaining on the clock.
Vlassopoulos then led what would be an eight-point run for the Macs, scoring five of those points, as the Macs again broke away from the Saints with a 55-46 lead. The Macs restored their 10-point lead with 3:21 remaining in the second half as
Keith Farmer scored on a fastbreak. In the final three minutes of actions, the Macs' free throw prowess shone through as they went 15-for-18 (83.3%) from the charity stripe, preventing any attempt at a rally by the Saints as the Macs secured a 76-62 victory.
On the game, the Macs outshot the Saints 24-for-52 (46.2%) to 23-for-66 (34.8%) from the field. Meanwhile, the Macs took advantage of every opportunity from the charity stripe, going 22-for-31 (71.0%) on the game. Individually, the Macs were led by
Asa Kitchen who scored 20 points while adding three assists, two rebounds, and one steal on the night for the Macs. McCullough and Vlassopoulos also contributed 14 points each while
Tyler Tillery led the Macs defensively with nine rebounds on the night.
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Scranton for a rematch against Marywood.
