IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Mighty Macs' women's basketball team got back on track on Saturday as the Macs defeated Centenary 56-38. With the victory, the Macs improve to a 10-4 record on the season and a 3-2 Atlantic East Conference record.
After allowing five early points to start the game, the Macs went on a nine-point scoring run, claiming the early lead. For the remainder of the first quarter, the Macs outscored the Cyclones 8-6, increasing their lead to 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. Freshman
Reese Mullins led the Macs in the first quarter with six points while
Kaitlyn Racobaldo and
Theresa Kearney scored four points each.
For the first five minutes of the second quarter, Centenary attempted to cut into Immaculata's lead, coming within three points at 21-18 with 5:44 remaining on the half. Immaculata, however, would keep Centenary scoreless for the remainder of the half, scoring six points to increase the lead t 27-18 at halftime.
Theresa Kearney led the Macs at the half with 10 points scored along with three rebounds, one steal, and one assist. Mullins also ended the first half with eight points overall. As a team, the Macs shot 11-for-34 (32.4%) from the field while the Cyclones shot 7-for-23 (30.4%).
The third quarter consisted of a defensive battle as neither team found much offensive success. On the quarter, the Macs outscored the Cyclones 9-8 with Racobaldo recording four of the Macs' points.
Akin to the Macs' success at the end of the first half, the Mighty Macs prevented the Cyclones from scoring for the first four-plus minutes of the fourth quarter while going on a 13-point run of their own. With a comfortable 49-26 lead, the Macs began to ease up offensively, allowing the Cyclones to score 12 points in the final six minutes of play as the score at the final buzzer stood at 56-38.
Kearney led the Macs on the game with 16 points scored along with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Mullins, meanwhile, led the Macs with seven rebounds while tallying 15 points and three steals.
Meghan Ricker also led the team defensively with six steals on the game.
The Mighty Macs will hit the road on Monday evening for a non-conference matchup against Haverford. Their game against the Fords is scheduled to start at 6:00 P.M.
