IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Mighty Macs women's basketball team dropped a 95-91 battle in overtime against Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon. Junior
Kaitlyn Racobaldo dropped 18 points on the game while
Theresa Kearney scored 17 to lead the Macs' offense. The Mighty Macs now drop to 2-1 conference record with a 9-3 overall record on the season.
The first quarter began with a lot of back-and-forth ball as neither team would cede the lead. Eventually, Immaculata claimed a 17-12 advantage with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter. Over the final three minutes, the Macs kept a narrow lead, leaving the first quarter with a 22-19 advantage.
Theresa Kearney and
Erin Kelly led the Macs in scoring through the first 10 minutes with six points apiece.
The Mighty Macs utilized the first six minutes of the second quarter to expand their lead to a seven-point margin at 35-28.
Reese Mullins scored six straight points during the rally to aid the Macs. The final four minutes of the first half, however, belonged to the Griffins as they went on a 10-5 rally to bring the Macs' advantage down to 40-39 going into the half.
At the half, the Mighty Macs were led in scoring by
Theresa Kearney. Kearney dropped 13 points on the half, going 6-for-11 from the floor while also leading the Macs with seven rebounds.
Erin Kelly and
Reese Mullins contributed nine and eight points respectively off the bench for the Macs on the half. As a team, the Macs outshot the Griffins from beyond the arc on the half, going 5-for-16 (31.3%) versus the Griffins' 4-for-16 (25.0%).
Gwynedd Mercy continued to score coming out of the gate in the second half, scoring 16 points to Immaculata's 6 over the first five minutes of play, taking a 55-46 lead over Immaculata.
Abigail Lentowski then scored six straight points to kick Immaculata into a 13-6 rally for the rest of the quarter as the score stood 61-59 in favor of Gwynedd Mercy going into the fourth quarter.
Racobaldo tied the game up right away in the fourth quarter as the back-and-forth struggle for the lead continued. The Macs reached a 76-72 lead with under two minutes remaining. A three-pointer with four seconds remaining, however, gave the Griffins an 80-78 advantage. The Macs then turned to the veteran Kearney, who recorded a layup as time expired to tie the game up at 80-80, forcing overtime.
Free throws were the difference in overtime as the Griffins were given 12 opportunities from the charity stripe over the five-minute period. Connecting on 10 of those shots, the Griffins quickly took the lead. Down 95-88 with only four seconds remaining, a buzzer-beater three point shot from
Abigail Boyer was not enough to turn the tide as the Mighty Macs were defeated 95-91.
Junior
Kaitlyn Racobaldo led the Mighty Macs on the game with 18 points scored and 10 rebounds to earn the double-double. Also earning a double-double was
Theresa Kearney, who scored 17 points while earning a team-leading 11 rebounds. Kearney's 17 points on the night moves her up to fifth place in program history with 1,272 career points scored, just four points behind head coach
Chrissy Rhine (Esbensen) for third place in program history.
The Mighty Macs will look to rebound on Wednesday as continue Atlantic East Conference play on the road against Neumann.
