IMMACULATA, Pa.- Following a pair of road setbacks to open the season last weekend, the Immaculata men's soccer team returned home to Draper Walsh Stadium to open its home slate with a non-league battle opposite Stevenson. Immaculata battled throughout the contest but fell by a final of 2-0.
In the 17
th minute, Stevenson opened the scoring with a pass across the box to a sliding Jason Kahan, which gave the Mustangs the early 1-0 lead. Following this goal, Stevenson continued to apply pressure as it had for much of the first half of play, which resulted in the Mustangs second goal of the contest in the 24
th minute off a long cross, which found the foot of Sean McDonald near the top of the box to give Stevenson a 2-0 lead midway through the first half of play.
Stevenson nearly extended its lead during the 32
nd minute with a penalty kick following a handball in the box but the attempt from Jaylen Smith skittered wide to keep the score locked at 2-0 in favor of Stevenson. In the 44
th minute, Stevenson earned its second penalty kick opportunity of the opening half via another handball but Immaculata goalkeeper
Garrett Pepper stood tall and made an impressive lunging save, for one his six saves of the half to keep the score at 2-0 heading into the halftime break.
Stevenson ended the first half with a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks after applying consistent pressure to the Macs defensive unit throughout the opening 45 minutes of action.
In the 65
th minute, Immaculata earned one of its best scoring chances to that point in the afternoon after
Christian Wuertz found
Justin Hahn but Stevenson keeper Kristian Slaby was up to the task as he made an impressive save to keep Immaculata off the scoreboard near the midpoint of the second half.
In the 88
th minute, Hahn earned another solid scoring chance but it was a leaping save by the Stevenson keeper, which kept the score locked at 0-2, which Stevenson would go on to win by.
Pepper ended the contest with seven saves while his counterpart-Slaby made six saves of his own in the shutout victory.
Stevenson ended the contest with a 21-6 edge in shots including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
Immaculata will be back in action at home on Saturday afternoon against another non-league foe in former Conference rival Cairn with that contest set to begin at 1 p.m.
