SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Immaculata men's soccer team opened up their 2021 season with a hard-fought battle against the #16-ranked Swarthmore Garnet Saturday night. The Mighty Macs lost in the final seconds of play in a 2-1 final score.
Swarthmore broke the ice first in the 25
th minute, scoring a shot passed a diving
Garrett Pepper as Immaculata fell to a 1-0 deficit.
The score remained 1-0 for a majority of the first half. With 15 seconds remaining in the first half,
Josh Fonder got the Mighty Macs on the board with his first goal of the season.
Christian Wuertz earned an assist on the goal.
The second half was a defensive battle as neither team gave up ground. With ten seconds remaining in regulation, Swarthmore scored a goal off a rebound from a free kick, securing the 2-1 victory.
The Mighty Macs held the #16 Garnet to two goals on the match and only eight shots on goal.
Immaculata will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Widener University. Their match against Widener is scheduled to start at 3:00 P.M.
