Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at Eastern

ST. Davids, Pa.- The Immaculata field hockey team took to the road on Saturday morning for its season opener against non-league foe Eastern. Immaculata scored the first goal of the contest but it was a late second half run from Eastern, which gave the Eagles the opening day victory over the Macs by a final of 4-1.

Gianna Gatto scored the first Mighty Mac goal of the season in the seventh minute, which gave the Macs a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Emerson Shauger evened the score for eastern in the 25th minute to send the game to the half locked at 1-1.

In the third quarter, Joel Groff and Jenna Lapp each found the back of the cage to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Morgan Ruhl scored the final goal of the contest in the waning seconds of regulation to move the score to 4-1 in favor of the Eagles.

Eastern ended the game with a 24-4 advantage over the Macs in shots (16-4 in shots on goal) and a 24-0 edge in penalty corners.

Freshman Julia Levase worked hard in goal throughout the afternoon making 12 big stops to limit the Eastern offensive attack.

Immaculata will be back in action on Monday afternoon on the road at Haverford with that contest set to begin at 4:30.
