IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's soccer team returned to action on Tuesday evening against non-league foe Rutgers-Camden. Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring with an early first half goal and this tally held up as the Scarlet Raptors escaped with a slim 1-0 victory over Immaculata on Tuesday night.
In the first half, Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring with a goal in the 8
th minute off the foot of Khylei Neal following a cross into the box from Ian Bialy, which gave the Scarlet Raptors an early 1-0 lead. Rutgers-Camden continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the first half, outshooting Immaculata by a 7-1 margin but the Immaculata defense led by senior goalkeeper
Garrett Pepper was up to the task as they limited Rutgers-Camden to its one lone goal to trail by just one heading into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, in the 54
th minute, Immaculata generated an excellent scoring opportunity as
Zachary Malcolm found his way on to the other end of a cross into the box but his shot went just high, to allow Rutgers-Camden to preserve its shutout for at least a few minutes more. In the 62
nd minute, Rutgers-Camden generated a great scoring opportunity off a free kick from just outside the box as Quincy Attobrah was able to get a head on but Pepper was able to make a leaping save on the goal line to keep the score locked at 1-0 nearing the midway point of the second half.
In the 75
th minute, Rutgers-Camden generated another strong chance with shot from the wing by Skyler Diggs but Pepper once again made a leaping save to punch the chance just over the bar to keep the score where it was and force a Rutgers-Camden corner. This corner would be the first of three consecutive corner kicks for the Scarlet Raptors but Immaculata stood tall defensively to keep Rutgers-Camden off the scoreboard and keep the score at 1-0 as the game neared the 80
th minute.
Immaculata generated a pair of strong chances in the closing 20 seconds of regulation but Rutgers-Camden withstood the late charge to escape with a slim 1-0 victory.
Rutgers-Camden ended the contest with a 16-3 edge in shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Pepper ended the night with three saves while his counterpart Sean Boen did not need to make a save en route to the victory.
Immaculata will be back in action on the road on Thursday afternoon when the team visits McDaniel for a 4 p.m. start.
