IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's lacrosse team returned home on Wednesday afternoon to host Atlantic East foe Marymount in a conference clash with major playoff implications. Immaculata led in the early stages of the first half but Marymount used a big second-half run to pull away and claim the 16-6 victory.
Marymount opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the game to claim an early lead. Immaculata responded with a three-goal run as
Sean Evans scored the first goal of the game off an assist from
Anthony Inserra before Inserra scored a pair of unassisted goals to give Immaculata a slim 3-2 lead with 4:01 to play. Immaculata added another goal with 2:41 to play as Evans took a feed from Long to give Immaculata a 4-2 lead. In the closing moments of the first quarter, Marymount scored another goal to trim the Macs lead to 4-3 heading into the second quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Marymount again opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the quarter before Immaculata countered with another goal from Inserra with 4:39 to play in the opening half to even the score at 5-5. Marymount scored its sixth goal of the half with three seconds remaining until the break to claim a 6-5 lead heading into the intermission.
Marymount opened the second half scoring less than 30 seconds in to reestablish a two-goal lead (7-5) in the early stages of the half. Immaculata quickly countered with another goal from Evans to make the score 7-6 with 13:30 to play in the third period. Marymount followed this up with a quick two-goal flurry to claim a 9-6 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the third period. Marymount scored two more goals with 8:34 and 5:02 to play, respectively to establish an 11-6 lead with five minutes to play in the third period. Marymount scored two more goals before the end of the third period to claim a commanding 13-6 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.
With 12:44 to play in regulation, Marymount further extended its lead with a man-up goal to take a 14-6 lead. Marymount tacked on two more goals in the closing minutes of regulation to prevail by a final of 16-6.
Cole Metzger had another big day in goal for Immaculata despite the setback as the junior made a program-record 29 saves in the setback.
Bobby Bausman turned in another strong defensive effort with a team-high nine ground balls and three caused turnovers while also winning 14-of-25 faceoffs in the game.
Offensively, Inserra led the way for Immaculata with three goals and two assists for a team-high five points in the setback.
As a team, Immaculata was outshot 58-to-37 and was successful on just 17-of-27 clear attempts while Marymount was successful on 20 of its 22 clearing attempts. Immaculata did manage to end the game with a 14-12 edge in faceoffs and even at 32-32 in ground balls in the setback.
Immaculata will now turn its attention to the Atlantic East Tournament, which will begin on Saturday afternoon. Additional information regarding the Macs first-round matchup will be post to gomightymacs.com later this week.
