Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- The Immaculata University field hockey team began its 2021 season on Saturday afternoon on the road at rival Gwynedd Mercy. Immaculata battled throughout and held the Griffins scoreless for the entirety of the second half, however, it was an early first half run, which enabled Gwynedd Mercy to escape with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Gwynedd Mercy opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes, which enabled them to carry a 2-0 lead into the second quarter of play. In the second quarter, Gwynedd Mercy tallied its third and what would prove to be its final goal of the contest just 43 seconds in to extend its lead to 3-0.

From this point, Immaculata stiffened defensively and managed to shut the Griffins offense down for the remainder of the contest. Maddy Edwards added a goal for Immaculata with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter, which brought the Macs back within a pair heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.

Senior goalie Randie Kuhar played well between the pipes for the Mighty Macs making three saves in the setback. Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper Abi Kennedy made a save of her own to limit the Macs offense in the victory.

Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy will square off again on Wednesday evening with that contest set to begin at 4 p.m. inside Draper Walsh Stadium.
