IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata field hockey team returned home to Draper Walsh Stadium for its home opener against the rival Gwynedd Mercy Griffins. Gwynedd Mercy opened the scoring in the first quarter but it was a three-goal third period, which was the primary difference maker as the Griffins earned the victory over the Mighty Macs by a final of 6-0.
Prior to the contest, Immaculata also honored its four seniors in
Randie Kuhar,
Shannon Lozier,
Macy Green, and
Meaghan Mackey for their contributions to the Immaculata field hockey program over the course of their four year careers.
In the fourth minute, Gwynedd Mercy opened the scoring to claim a 1-0 lead in the early stages of the first quarter. Gwynedd Mercy added another goal in the ninth minute, which gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the first period of play.
In the second quarter, Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy both generated chances but the Mighty Mac and Griffin defenses proved to be up to the task as the game went to the halftime break with the Macs still trailing 2-0.
Gwynedd Mercy extended its lead midway through the third period as the Griffins extended their advantage to 3-0. Three minutes later Gwynedd Mercy scored its second goal of the quarter to establish a 4-0 lead. The Griffins added another goal in the closing stages of the third following back-to-back penalty corners to establish a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Gwynedd Mercy extended its lead to 6-0 with 7:30 to play in regulation, which the Griffins would go on to win by.
As a team, Immaculata was outshot 24-12 including a 20-6 margin in shots on goal. Senior
Randie Kuhar was exceptional for the Mighty Macs making 12 saves while fellow senior Lozier and teammate
Nicole Vigna registered one defensive save each in the setback.
Immaculata will remain home on Friday evening to host Wesley before traveling to the Wolverine's for its final game of the season on Sunday the 14
th with that contest set to begin at 1 p.m.
