IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's lacrosse team (1-1) returned to the field on Saturday afternoon looking to record its first win of the season in non-conference action opposite Wesley. Immaculata erased an early first-quarter deficit and recorded its first win of the season over Wesley by a final score of 11-6.
Prior to the beginning of the game, Immaculata honored its four seniors in
Nate Nale,
Bobby Bausman,
Steve Long, and
Will Reeder for their contributions to the Immaculata men's lacrosse program throughout their Mighty Mac careers.
In the first quarter, Wesley opened the scoring just 1:27 into the game to claim an early 1-0 lead. The Wolverines extended their lead with another from Derek Hallock moments later to claim an early 2-0 advantage. With just over three minutes to play in the first quarter,
David Azzarano broke through for his second goal of the year to trim the deficit to 2-1. Immaculata scored its second goal of the period and equalizer with 1:28 to play in the first quarter when
Jackson Fonseca-Webb took a feed from Azzarano to even the score at 2-2. Immaculata goalkeeper
Cole Metzger made an excellent save in the closing seconds of the first quarter, which sent the game to the second quarter locked at 2-2.
In the second period, Fonseca-Webb and Azzarano connected once again for Fonseca's second goal of the contest to give the Macs a 3-2 advantage. Immaculata grew its lead moments later when
Sean Evans took advantage of a man-up opportunity to score his first goal of the contest on an assist from
Anthony Inserra, which extended the Mighty Macs lead to 4-2. With 9:53 to play in the first half, Azzarano scored his second of the game this time via an assist from Evans to give the Macs a commanding 5-2 lead. Wesley would cut into this lead with 8:46 to play in the half, however, which trimmed the Immaculata advantage to 5-3 near the midway point of the second quarter. With 2:55 to play in the half, Wesley scored once again following a perfect feed to the crease, which trimmed the Macs lead to 5-4 heading to the halftime break.
In the first half, Metzger played well making three big saves to limit the Wesley offense throughout the opening 30 minutes. Bausman also performed well at the faceoff spot winning 6-of-10 faceoffs for Immaculata in the first half.
To open the second half, Fonseca-Webb buried his third goal of the contest off an assist once again from Azzarano to give the Macs a two-goal advantage once again. Less than a minute later, Inserra scored another goal off a feed from X from Azzarano to give the Macs a 7-4 lead early in the third period of play. With 9:55 to play in the third quarter, Fonseca-Webb scored once again to extend the Macs lead to 8-4. With seven minutes to play, Evans scored once again off an assist from Azzarano to give the Macs a commanding 9-4 lead.
Just seconds into the fourth quarter, Wesley scored its fifth goal of the contest to cut the Macs lead to 9-5 early in the final quarter. Evans added another goal to his impressive day off an assist from Inserra with 7:35 to play, which extended the Macs lead to 10-5. With 6:53 to play, Wesley scored once again to cut the Macs lead to 10-6. With 5:05 to play, Azzarano returned to the goal column off an assist from Fonseca-Webb to restore the Macs five goal advantage making the score 11-6 in favor of the Mighty Macs.
Overall, Azzarano logged eight points with three goals and five assists to lead the Macs in scoring. Fonseca-Webb led the Macs in goals in the victory ending the night with four goals and one assist to help lead the Macs in the victory. Defensively,
Bobby Bausman played a key role in the Macs win once again ending the night with 12 ground balls while also causing three turnovers for the Macs defense. Bausman also won 13-of-20 faceoffs for the Macs in the victory.
In goal,
Cole Metzger played the majority of the contest making 14 saves while surrendering just six goals before being relieved by
Matthew Kirkland for the final two minutes of the contest.
As a team, Immaculata outshot its guests by a gaping 45-29 margin (30-20 shots on goal). Immaculata was 19-of-25 on its clear attempts while also winning 13-of-20 faceoffs including all five in the third quarter of play. The Mighty Macs were also efficient on their man-up opportunities as the team scored a pair of goals in their four man-up opportunities.
Immaculata will return to action on Saturday, March 27
th against Cabrini in its Atlantic East opener with that contest set to begin at 1 p.m. inside Draper Walsh Stadium.
