IMMACULATA, Pa. – A strong showing in the second half led the Immaculata women's basketball team to an 86-47 blowout against Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon. Graduate student
Theresa Kearney led the effort for the Mighty Macs, scoring 23 points on the game. The Mighty Macs now riding off their third consecutive victory, improves to 5-1 on the season while the Nittany Lions drop to a 1-5 record overall.
Immaculata came out strong in the first quarter, dropping nine consecutive points over the game's first four minutes to take an early 9-0 lead.
Theresa Kearney and
Jordan Rook each scored four points over the stretch while
Morgan Falcone recorded one point on a free throw. Penn State Abington began to retaliate, however, scoring 11 points during the remainder of the quarter to narrow Immaculata's lead to 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter remained neck-and-neck as the Nittany Lions came to within one point of the Mighty Macs as the score stood 20-19 with four minutes remaining on the half.
Abigail Lentowski and
Jordan Rook, however, recorded four straight free throws to regain the Mighty Macs' momentum. The Macs outscored the Nittany Lions 9-4 during the final four minutes of the first half, earning a 29-23 lead at the half.
Kearney and Rook's abilities were on display on the first half for the Mighty Macs as the pair scored a combined 24 of the Macs' 29 points on the half. As a team, the Macs shot 11-for-41 (26.8%) from the field on the first half while shooting 7-for-15 (50%) from the charity stripe.
The Mighty Macs began to apply pressure to the Nittany Lions' defense in the second half. Over the first seven minutes of the third quarter, the Macs increased their lead to 46-35. The Mighty Macs then shutout the Nittany Lions over the final three minutes of the third, increasing their lead to 57-35 uninterrupted on the quarter.
Owning 22-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Mighty Macs set out expand that league, dropping 29 points total on the fourth, as many points as the Macs scored in the entire first half. Having already increased their lead to 64-39, the Macs went on a 13-point rally late into the game to further solidify their lead. The Macs went on to win the game by a score of 86-47.
Theresa Kearney led the Mighty Macs' offense on the game, scoring 24 points while earning six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Kearney has now scored 1199 points on her career, moving in 12
th place in program history, beating out
Sara Smith's 1,195 points.
Kearney was joined by
Jordan Rook, who earned 21 points on the night with five steals, two rebounds, and one assist. Rook is the first Mighty Mac to eclipse 100 points on the season, standing at a team-leading 102 on the season. Freshman standout
Abigail Lentowski, meanwhile, led the Macs defensively on the game, earning 12 rebounds while scoring four points of her own.
Morgan Falcone also contributed defensively, earning six steals on the game while also recording six points and four rebounds.
The Mighty Macs will return to action next on Saturday, December 11
th as they host Washington College (Md.) for a 1:00 P.M. matchup.
