Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short in OT Loss to Washington

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought overtime matchup against the Washington (Md.) Shorewomen on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Shorewomen took an early 9-2 lead over the Mighty Macs, extending it to 14-6 with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. Two successful free throws by Reese Mullins and a layup from Kaitlyn Racobaldo cut into the Shorewomen's lead to 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Macs went on a 9-5 rally to start the second quarter thanks to free throws from Abigail Boyer, Morgan Falcone, and Theresa Kearney, tying the game up at 19-19. The Shorewomen responded with a nine-point run of their own, regaining a 28-19 lead. With under three minutes remaining in the half, the Macs began to chip away at the Shorewomen's lead, with the score standing at 30-23 at the end of the first half.
 
Theresa Kearney led the Mighty Macs offensively on the half, scoring eight of the Macs' 23 points while also accruing four rebounds, one assist, and one block. Abigail Lentowski led the Macs defensively with six rebounds while also contributing with two blocks and one free throw made. As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 5-for-6 (83.3%) from the charity stripe on the half.
 
The third quarter began with back-and-forth action as Immaculata outscored Washington 5-4 in the first six minutes of the third quarter. A four-point run by Washington over the next two minutes, however, increased the lead to 38-28 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Immaculata then dropped five points over the final 90 seconds to bring the deficit back to single digits at 40-33.
 
Down seven points, the Macs went to work going into the fourth quarter. Jordan Rook dropped six points to lead a 10-5 run in favor of the Macs over the first six minutes of the quarter, bringing the Macs within two of the Shorewomen at 45-43. With 2:42 remaining, a layup from Racobaldo gave the Mighty Macs a 48-47 lead, their first of the day. The Shorewomen regained a lead 52-50 on free throws with 28 seconds remaining. As time expired, Erin Kelly connected on a jumpshot to force overtime.
 
After Immaculata broke the ice early in the five-minute overtime period, Washington took control, scoring six points before the Macs could score again with 90 minutes remaining. Washington went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe during overtime to hold a 62-59 lead over Immaculata at the final buzzer.
 
Kearney led the Macs with 13 points on the game while Rook, Racobaldo, and Boyer each contributed 10 points as well. Lentowski, meanwhile earned 10 rebounds for the Mighty Macs.
 
As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 20-for-65 (30.8%) from the field and 7-for-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc while shooting an impressive 12-for-15 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.
 
The Mighty Macs will look to rebound on Tuesday as they host Rosemont for a 6:00 P.M. matchup.
