Women's Basketball Earns Victory Over NJCU

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata women's basketball team will enter winter break on a high as they defeated New Jersey City 94-85 on Thursday evening. Freshmen Reese Mullins and Abigail Lentowski led the Mighty Macs with 15 points each on the night while Jordan Rook notched 14.
 
Two minutes into the first quarter, the score stood at 4-4. The Mighty Macs then went on a 7-2 run against the Gothic Knights highlighted by a three-pointer by Jordan Rook. Over the next five minutes of the quarter, burning into the final minute of play, the Macs went on a 12-point run against the Knights to increase their lead to 23-8. The Gothic Knights scored six points in the final minute of the quarter to cut the Mighty Macs' lead to 25-14 at the end of the quarter.
 
The second quarter consisted of back-to-back basketball in which neither team allowed the other to gain much traction. Up 11 at the start of the half, the Macs maintained the advantage as the score stood 34-23 four minutes into the quarter. The Gothic Knights managed come within eight points of the Macs heading into the half as the score stood 45-37.
 
At the half, the Macs were led in scoring by Abigail Lentowski, who notched 13 points and three rebounds on the half. As a team, the Macs shot 17-for-33 (51.5%) from the field on the half and 9-for-12 (75.0%) from the charity stripe.
 
New Jersey City worked their way back to a 46-42 deficit against Immaculata just under two minutes before the Macs fought back. Immaculata then scored nine consecutive points over the next two minutes to regain a 55-42 lead over New Jersey City. Over the next five minutes, the Macs extended their lead to a 19-point lead at 73-54 with under two minutes remaining in the quarter before the score at the end of the quarter stood at 73-56.
 
Throughout the fourth quarter, the Macs were able to stave off a potential Gothic Knights comeback. The Mighty Macs scored 21 points on the quarter while allowing 29 points from the Gothic Knights.
 
Mullins and Lentowski earned 15 points each to lead the Macs offensively. Lentowski recorded nine rebounds, two assists, and one block while Mullins recorded two rebounds, one assist. Rook also scored 14 points on the night while Morgan Falcone and Meghan Ricker recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Mighty Macs will return to action after winter break on January 5th as they open up Atlantic East play at home against Marywood.
