COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Immaculata Mighty Macs women's basketball team started off their 2021-22 season with a 71-65 victory over Ursinus on Saturday.
The Mighty Macs jumped to a 10-5 lead early in the first quarter over the Bears.
Theresa Kearney and
Morgan Falcone each recorded three-pointers early on to lead the Macs. The Bears managed to come within one of the Mighty Macs in the first quarter, ending the quarter with a 16-15 lead for the Macs.
Immaculata took control in the second quarter, going on an 11-6 run to start the quarter, taking a 27-21 advantage.
Jordan Rook made three straight shots, including a three-pointer, within that stretch to aid Immaculata. Ursinus attempted to regain later in the quarter, but Immaculata held on, owning a 31-27 lead heading into the half.
Junior
Jordan Rook led the charge for Immaculata in the first half, recording nine points and three rebounds on the half.
Kaitlyn Racobaldo was right behind Rook on the half, earning seven points and two rebounds. Overall, the Mighty Macs shot 12-for-26 from the field and 4-for-11 from beyond the arc on the half.
The Bears came out of the half ready to cut into the Mighty Macs' lead, scoring 12 points in the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter to take a slim 39-37 lead over the Macs, their only lead on the game. Over the next four minutes, however, the Mighty Macs retaliated, scoring 11 unanswered points. Graduate student
Theresa Kearney started the charge for the Macs scoring the first six points on a three-point shot, a jump-shot, and a free throw. Overall, both teams broke even on the third quarter, scoring 19 points each on the quarter as the Macs maintained a four-point advantage at 50-46.
The Mighty Macs did not relent in the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 66-57 with under two minutes remaining. The Bears put together a few last-minute baskets but not enough as the Mighty Macs secured their season-opening victory 71-65.
The Macs were led on the game by
Theresa Kearney, who recorded a team-leading 19 points, two steals, and five rebounds.
Morgan Falcone also earned five rebounds while accruing eight points and was tied with Rook for a team-leading four assists on the game. Rook, meanwhile, dropped 18 points with four rebounds and four assists.
As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 25-for-50 from the field going 8-for-20 in three-point opportunities.
The Mighty Macs will travel to West Point, N.Y. next for their Tuesday night matchup against Division I Army. This will be Immaculata's first recorded match against Army since 1985. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
