IMMACULATA, Pa. – The #2-seed Immaculata men's soccer team defeated #7 Gwynedd Mercy 4-0 on Saturday in the Atlantic East Conference Quarterfinals.
Josh Fonder scored one goal and registered an assist to lead the Mighty Macs offensively as the Mighty Macs advance to the Conference Semifinals.
The first goal for Immaculata came in the 31
st minute.
Oldy Dielce took a corner kick, sending it into the penalty box and finding the head of Fonder. Fonder then headed the ball to
EJ Martin at the back end of the goal, who scored on an open net. The goal was the sophomore's first collegiate goal.
At the half, the Mighty Macs held the 1-0 lead while owning a commanding 19-1 advantage in shots taken.
Seven minutes into the second half,
Josh Fonder was fouled in the penalty box, earning himself a penalty kick. The junior playmaker quickly put the ball away to increase Immaculata's lead to 2-0.
Later, in the 68
th minute,
Chad Catalana fed the ball back to
Christian Wuertz at the top of the penalty box. Wuertz then lifted the ball past the Griffins' goalkeeper and into the upper left corner of the net. The goal, his first collegiate goal, increased the Macs' lead to 3-0.
Matthew Kirkpatrick then closed out the match for the Mighty Macs, scoring the fourth goal of the game in the 73
rd minute to secure a 4-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
The Mighty Macs accrued 38 shots on the day against the Griffins with eight of them coming from
Josh Fonder. Fonder accrued five shots on goal on the day, securing one goal and earning an assist for the Macs.
Immaculata will move on to the Atlantic East Semifinals where they will host the Neumann University Knights. The match will take place on Tuesday, November 2
