Men's Volleyball Surges Back to Top Neumann in Four-Set Thriller

IMMACULATA, Pa.- After a hard-fought loss opposite a talented Widener team on Tuesday evening, the Immaculata men's volleyball remained home for the final game of its two-game home stand to host CVC foe Neumann. Immaculata captured the first, third, and fourth sets by identical 27-25 scores en route to the 3-1 victory to improve to 1-2 in CVC player and register the team's first CVC victory in program history.

In the first set, Neumann jumped out to an early 11-6 lead, which prompted an Immaculata timeout. Following the timeout, Immaculata began to battle back winning nine of the next 13 points to trim the deficit to 15-14 midway through the set. From this point, Immaculata and Neumann traded points throughout the balance of the set as Immaculata captured the opening set by a final of 27-25.

Neumann opened the second set on a 6-2 run before Immaculata countered with a brief 3-0 run of its own to trim the deficit back to just one (6-5). From this point, Neumann got on another 7-3 run to claim a 13-8 lead, thus, prompting an Immaculata timeout. Following the timeout, Neumann went on a 7-5 run to claim a 20-13 lead late in the set, thus, prompting the Mighty Macs to use their second timeout of the set. Immaculata worked to battle back after this timeout, however, Neumann was able to capture the second set by a final of 25-16 to even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Neumann opened play with a 10-3 run, which prompted an Immaculata timeout to slow the Neumann momentum. The timeout served its intended purpose as Immaculata went on a 6-1 run following the timeout to trim the deficit back to just two (11-9), which prompted Neumann to take a timeout of its own. Immaculata and Neumann traded runs throughout the remainder of the set before Immaculata captured the final two points of the set to capture the third set 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.

After trading points through the early stages of the fourth set, Neumann got on a 5-1 run to claim a 10-5 lead early in the fourth set. Immaculata answered back with a 12-7 run to even the score at 17-17, thus, prompting a Neumann timeout in the middle stages of the fourth set. Neumann went on a brief run from this point to claim a 23-19 lead before Immaculata began to battle back once more cutting the deficit to 23-21, thus, forcing Neumann to burn its second timeout of the set. With its back against the wall in the fourth set trailing 24-21, Immaculata closed out the match with a 6-4 run to capture the fourth set 27-25, thus, winning the match 3-1.

Garrett Pepper was exceptional once again for Immaculata registering another triple-double with 10 kills along with a team-high 18 assists and 19 digs. John Bohrer also registered a double-double in the victory with a team-high 11 kills while also coming away with 11 digs in the victory. Bryce Wiltbank and RJ Ubowski tied for the match-high in blocks with five blocks each while Pepper and Bohrer also tied for the team-lead in aces with three aces each.

As a team, Immaculata hit .066 on the match with its best set coming in the first when the team hit 0.2 on the set.
