Men's Basketball Edged by Cabrini in Overtime; Tillery Sets Block Record

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Seeking to snap a two-game losing streak, the Immaculata men's basketball team returned to action on Wednesday evening opposite crosstown rival Cabrini. In a game that featured 11 lead changes, Immaculata fell to Cabrini in overtime by a final of 87-86.

Despite the setback, Immaculata did manage to make history this evening as Tyler Tillery broke the single-season block record and Brandon McCullough tied his career-high with 29 points to lead all scorers. Jordan Ambrose finished with 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting while Tyler Tillery ended with 13 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double performance.

In the first half, Immaculata and Cabrini traded runs for much of the first half of play but it was a late surge from Immaculata, which gave the Macs a 40-35 lead heading to the halftime break.

McCullough was hot from the field in the first half making 8 of his 11 attempts from the field including a pair of three-pointers en route to an 18-point first half performance. In the first half, Tyler Tillery also etched his name into the Immaculata record books with four blocks to increase his season total to 37, thus, becoming the single-season block leader in program history. The record was previously held by Scott Martson who had the set the mark during the 2006-07 season.

In the first half of play, Immaculata shot 48.4 % from the field and 40.0 % from deep while also shooting 60.0 % from the stripe to claim the early lead.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Cabrini opened with a 10-8 run to trim the deficit to just three points (48-45) with 15 minutes to play in the second half. Cabrini continued its run over the next two minutes of play to claim a slim 52-51 lead with 13:01 to play before a pair of Jordan Ambrose free throws allowed the Macs to regain a 53-52 lead.

This 53-52 lead would be the Macs final lead of regulation as Cabrini responded with a 14-6 run that saw the Cavs shoot 5-0f-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from deep to claim a 66-58 lead with eight minutes to play, which prompted an Immaculata timeout.

Out of the timeout, Immaculata went on a 5-0 run over the next 2:11 of play to trim the deficit back to three points with 5:49 to play in regulation.

With 1:22 to play in regulation, Jordan Ambrose enjoyed a successful trip to the line, which saw him knock down a pair of free throws to even the score at 75-75, which would prove to be the score at the end of regulation following a pair of unsuccessful attempts in the closing seconds of regulation by both teams.

In overtime, Immaculata briefly held leads throughout the extra session but it was a late basket by Cabrini, which proved to be the difference maker as the Cavaliers survived a last-second three point attempt by Immaculata to escape with an 87-86 overtime victory.

As a team, Immaculata shot 45.6 % from the field and 31.8 % from three-point range while also shooting 65.4 % from deep. Additionally, Immaculata ended the game with a slim +5 (46-41) edge in rebounding.

Justin Gans led Cabrini in scoring with 21 points on the evening while DJ Smith ended the game with 20 points of his own.

Immaculata will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at Marywood with that contest set to begin at 3 p.m.
