IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata University women's basketball team dropped its home opener against Haverford on Tuesday evening by the score of 65-57.
Three Mighty Macs scored in double figures as Theresa Kearney scored a team-high 17 points. Annie Kohutka added 14 points while Shannon Kelly chipped in with 12. Anna-Sophia Capizzi led the way for Haverford with 27 points while making four of her six three point attempts.
Immaculata got off to a blistering start on its home floor, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. Shannon Kelly capped the run with a three-pointer to give the Macs a five-point advantage. Kelly scored her eighth point of the quarter to put the Mighty Macs up 14-5 at the halfway point of the quarter.
Haverford would get the offense clicking towards the end of the quarter and forced a one-point deficit at the end of the first. Immaculata shot 63.6 percent (7-for-11) in the first 10 minutes.
The Fords took control in the second quarter and went on a 12-2 run. The Mighty Macs were limited to only two points in eight minutes as Haverford took a 30-21 lead with 2:50 remaining in the half. Lauren Carrafa ended the drought with a pair of baskets as the Fords held a 35-25 advantage at the half.
Capizzi scored 21 points in the first half to build the lead for Haverford.
Haverford built a 10-point lead to start the third quarter, but Immaculata never let the game get out of reach. The Macs went on a 9-3 run spanning nearly five minutes of play to make it 47-42 with 55 seconds left in the quarter. Jordan Rook made a layup to cut the lead to four but Lauren Howard answered for the Fords, hitting a three at the end of the quarter for a 51-44 advantage heading into the fourth.
Both defenses stiffened in the fourth as Immaculata trimmed the lead to three with six minutes to play. Immaculata held the Fords scoreless for the first 4:23 of the fourth as the Macs trailed 51-48. Julianna Clark ended the scoring drought to help keep Immaculata at bay.
Haverford would make six free-throws in the final 1:29 of action to hold on for the eight-point win.
Kearney added six rebounds and two assists in the setback.
Immaculata returns to Alumnae Hall on Thursday evening when it faces Bryn Mawr at 7 p.m.
